God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
There once was a King of a vast domain. There were riches beyond measure. One day it was reported to the King that someone had been stealing gold from the kingdom. The King was distressed because everyone was carefully taken care of in the kingdom. They really had no wants. The King issued a decree that whoever was caught stealing the gold would receive 10 lashes. After the decree, the King was sad to hear that it fell on deaf ears, and the stealing of the gold was continuing. The King then declared that whoever was caught stealing would receive 40 lashes. This was a death sentence. No one could endure 40 lashes, but this was his decree. It was reported to the King that they had caught the thief. It turns out that it was the King’s very own daughter who was stealing. What a dilemma the King was in over this situation. The King knew he must carry out his decree. He ordered that his daughter receive the 40 lashes. The day came for the sentence to be carried out and they led his daughter to a table where they stripped the clothing from her back and strapped her to a table. Right when the lashes were to start the King yelled out STOP!! Everyone looked to see what the King was doing, and he walked down to the table and took off his robe and shirt and laid across his daughter and told them to continue with the lashes. They pleaded with the King and told him he would be killed, but the King insisted that they carry out his orders. The King died in his daughter’s place.
This is not my own story, but one I truly appreciate as a reminder of the doctrine of substitution. This is an illustration of the love that God has for us through the death and resurrection of his Son our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus bore our sins on the cross and died that we could be forgiven. Jesus was raised from the dead that we would have eternal life when we have faith in Him who knew no sin but was willing to be the perfect sacrificial Lamb of God that would bring us salvation. We are saved by grace through our faith in Jesus. This is no work that we have done, it is a gift from God. (Ephesians 2:8) When we confess Jesus with our lips and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, WE WILL BE SAVED! (Romans 10:9) This is God’s grace for us. Thank you, Jesus, for we know we were bought at a great price that we could never pay. Jesus is Lord.
