Carter Hills Cemetery-Guidelines

1. General Rules

1.1 The purchaser of a lot in Carter Hills Cemetery does not acquire the property itself, but the ‘right of burial.

1.2 Lots are sold for no other purpose than for the burial of human remains without regard to race, color or national origin.

1.3 All lots are sold for cash. Interments shall not be made until payment is made.

1.4 Assignment or transfer of any lot will at all times be subject to the rules and regulations of Carter Hills cemetery. No burial space or interest therein will be transferred without the permission of the trustees of Carter Hills Cemetery. A notarized statement indicating the permission of original purchaser and his/her heirs is required.

1.5 These rules are subject to be amended at any time as the trustees deem necessary.

2. Sale and Care of Lots

2.1 Lot prices are $200.00 for members and regular attendees of Coldwater Community Church and $400.00 for non-members.

2.2 Lots are sold in increments of 2. If a person wants 1 lot, he will be limited to the part of the cemetery designated by the trustees for sale of single lots.

2.3 Upkeep of the cemetery is the responsibility of the trustees. Any donation for upkeep can be made to the trustees.

2.4 Cremated human remains may be interred within a purchaser’s occupied lot.

Occupations will be limited to two per grave unless approved by the trustees.

3. Decorations

3.1 Lot owners are allowed to mark the lots they own with 4 commercial stone markers. One marker in each corner whether 1 lot or 32. Markers are to be set flush with the ground to allow mowing over it without hitting the marker. Placement of the markers must be approved by the trustees.

3.2 Nothing is to be attached to trees without written permission of trustees.

3.3 No ironwork or wire will be allowed on lots and no seats will be permitted except by written permission of the trustees.

3.4 No landscaping of lots is permitted. No shrubs, trees or enclosures, fences or borders of any kind are permitted around grave or lot.

3.5 All headstones must have a base which extends 4 inches beyond the entire perimeter of the headstone.

3.6 No headstones will be taller than 3 feet above grade level.

3.7 All graves are to have headstones in place within 6 months of day of burial.

3.8 No headstone or footstone is to be set without the lot owner first informing the trustees so the lot may be marked for proper placement of stone. If trustees are not informed, the lot owner will be responsible for the cost incurred to place the stone in the proper location.

3.9 In the event headstones need to be re-leveled, the family is responsible for the costs. In the event of vandalism, it is the responsibility of the family to repair or replace the headstone or footstone.

3.10 All plans for mausoleums, crypts, and above ground graves are to be submitted to trustees for approval before proceeding with installation and are limited to 48 inches in height. F Section is the only part of the cemetery in which these are allowed.

3.11 The income from the perpetual care trust fund is used for the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds, drives, fence enclosures and buildings, but does not include private mausoleums, crypts or above ground graves. Before any mausoleum, crypt or above ground grave is erected, the owner must deposit 10% of the cost of such structure to be invested to provide an income for proper care in perpetuity. Any repairs or upkeep to the structure while the owner is alive is the responsibility of the owner.

3.12 Trustees retain the right to remove anything from a lot they deem to be unsightly,

objectionable or injurious, or does not meet cemetery guidelines or obstructs the

mowing of the grounds.

3.13 American flags may be placed on veterans’ graves 24 hours prior to and removed within 48 hours after these designated holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4 th and Veterans’ Day. Flags will also be allowed the 4 th Sunday in September which is designated Decoration Day for the cemetery. Flags are to be placed on grave in approved holders.

4. Interments

4.1 Trustees are to be notified any time a grave is opened to allow for proper placement.

4.2 Cost associated with opening and closing the grave is the responsibility of the lot owner. The funeral home is responsible for disposing of any excess dirt and rock.
