SUBSTITUTION
Only Luke is with me. Get John Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. 2 Timothy 4:11
Paul and Barnabus were strong partners in ministry. They traveled together spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all who would hear. They would often take others with them to help in the ministry. John Mark was with them on one occasion and decided he would leave. Paul felt that John Mark had deserted them in their mission. The time came to go out again, and Barnabus wanted to take John Mark, but Paul refused to let him go because John Mark had left them before. Paul wanted no part of him. Barnabus still wanted John Mark to help. This became such a point of contention that Paul and Barnabus had words and went their separate ways in mission.
Sometimes in our lives we will have people that will desert us in our time of need. They will not be there for us. They will let us down. But we should not be so quick to be done with them. We may not know what they have going on in their lives. They may need as much help with what they are doing or with what they have going on in their lives. So, we should not throw them away so quickly.
In our scripture above, Paul is an old man near the end of his ministry and has seen and heard of all that John Mark had done for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, in his advanced years and willingness to see the good that God works in his people. Paul asked for John Mark to be sent to him to help in his ministry. This John Mark is the writer of the Gospel of Mark.
Even when we feel let down, let us not forget that we do not throw people away. God has a plan for you and for them. Let God’s perfect will and timing lead us to be reconciled.
